From La Isleta del Moro, you can walk to one of the most distinctive sites in Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park: the former gold mines and the Denver processing plant at Rodalquilar.

The suggested circular route is about 16.9 km long, takes just over five hours and includes roughly 570 m of climbing. This is a proper day hike rather than a short stroll. In return, it offers volcanic hills, wide views and industrial ruins that stand in striking contrast to the white coastal villages.

From a fishing village to the mining landscape

The walk begins in La Isleta del Moro and heads inland towards the Rodalquilar valley. As the sea recedes behind you, the landscape becomes more austere, with dry gullies, exposed rock and traces of the area’s former mining activity.

The most recognisable landmark is the monumental concrete structure of the Denver plant. This is not a restored museum but an open industrial landscape. View the ruins from safe, accessible paths and always respect barriers and local signs.

A short history of gold in Rodalquilar

Mining shaped this part of Almería for many decades. Gold was discovered locally in the nineteenth century, and the modern Dorr plant began operating in 1931. The Denver plant—the most prominent structure today—opened in 1956. Mining ceased in 1966, leaving behind a remarkable collection of buildings, tanks and excavations.

The route is therefore more than a scenic hike. It shows how industry transformed the valley and how abandoned structures have gradually become part of Cabo de Gata’s dry volcanic scenery.

How to prepare

  • Choose a cooler day and avoid the middle of the day, particularly in summer.
  • Carry plenty of water, food, sun protection and a hat.
  • Wear shoes with a good sole; parts of the terrain are rocky and uneven.
  • Download the route before setting off and check current park regulations.
  • Do not enter unstable buildings or cross areas marked as closed.
Looking for a shorter option? The official Cerro del Cinto Corto trail starts in Rodalquilar. It is 4.4 km long, takes around 1 hour 30 minutes and is rated easy. You can drive to Rodalquilar before starting.

A rewarding Cabo de Gata day out

Allow an unhurried day for the full loop, including time for breaks and exploring the views around the ruins. Back in La Isleta del Moro, finish with a rest at Playa del Peñón Blanco or dinner by the small fishing harbour.

Open the latest route in Komoot before departure. Trail conditions and access can change, so an offline map is more useful on the ground than a written description alone.
